I am not a fan of fantasy or sci-fi as a rule, but Visle War, while clearly written as a fantasy novel, transcended that categorization for me. The plot is well-paced, intricate, but not overly complex, and, being a history buff, I enjoyed the setting in the time of the Crusades. Lacina does an excellent job of creating a window into a time and place that is foreign to most of us, with rich descriptions that stopped before they became excessive. For me, though, what really stands out in the book are the characters, both as individuals and in their interaction with each other. They are highly developed and avoid falling into stereotypes. Even the ones I do not particularly like are fully fleshed out, and I do not like them for the same reasons I would not have liked them had I met them in real life. The dialogue, too, is well-written and believable. I actually read parts of dialogue out loud, and I never found anything stilted or overdone in any of the exchanges in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Visle War, and I recommend even to those of you who don't usually delve into fantasy.Product details

Beautifully written. This authors mind is obviously pregnant with stories. Waiting for the next book.
I don't normally like split timelines, although I feel like they're becoming quite common. This one was very well done, and seamlessly joined together in stride to create a well-paced storyline. There are a lot of moving pieces, and it's an interesting mix of foreign words, ancient times, and alternate worlds. It all fell into place as the pace increased through the climax, and I found myself getting more and more drawn in.
This is an engrossing novel, and an education. Blending realities and cultures, this book takes you to places that I haven't often read about. It's not often that through a fantasy novel I can feel that I've become a smarter person with a broader experience, but this is the one that does it. This breakout novel should be required reading for those who want to know more about the world we live in through a lens of the past--or anyone who wants an entertaining read.
When this book was published, I was incredibly intrigued and bought it immediately. I wanted to see if this "Professor Ray Lacina" guy had the literary chops to be a novelist. Sure, I had enjoyed his past work as a whimsical, witty humor columnist for our college newspaper back in the 1980's, but writing a novel? That's a whole different ball game.
It exceeded my expectations. Literally from the first page, I was hooked. Although Visle War is officially classified in the "fantasy/sci-fi" genre, to me it was simply one big, rollicking adventure. I'm resisting the temptation to shift into my "writer/editor/proofreader" mode and start talking shop about the stunning imagery, believable characterization, and meticulous attention to historical details and will instead go straight into consumer mode It was fun.
Let's be honest...this is a man's book. Written by a man, about men, for men. If this novel suffers from anything, it is lack of estrogen...proven by the fact that there is just one female character within its 300-plus pages--the Mistress of the Deep Fount. But wow, what power she packs. A brave, intelligent leader...tough, yet sensitive...beautiful, but not a temptress. My favorite characters, though, are Muslim commander Ibn Tariq and Christian commander Gerard of Aragon. Both are battle-hardened soldiers who are programmed by years of war to despise each other, but who join forces against a common evil. Over the course of the story, they develop a mutual respect, and a deep friendship forms. While this book can certainly not be described as sentimental, I will freely admit to a genuine "lump in my throat" moment during their climactic battle scene against the forces of evil.
A nice little surprise at the end is that this book has an epilogue. Readers are treated to a peek at the characters several years down the road...kind of like a mini-sequel, wrapped neatly in a bow. But thankfully, not too neatly.
As a fantasy book, this stayed within the lines of the genre- one powerful object, quest centered around finding and acquiring this object- while also managing to combine true history and a message of friendship across lines. Some of the scenes were gripping, and it's always exciting when you think one of your favorite characters is dead and isn't! It was a little difficult to grasp the characters at times. Some aspects of them weren't quite present, like their quirks or preferences. One more reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that I'm a bit petty about the lead female character having to be mesmerizingly lovely when the male leads weren't quite described, and the fact that she got away with a bit of mild grief over killing clueless people ) All in all, this is a book to read- a refreshing and riveting read in the fantasy genre.
I don't do sci fi, nor do I do poetry, they just aren't my thing. But I had to grab this book because it was written by a man who is a friend, brother, and Master Wordsmith 👍🙏😎❤️, and I felt compelled on many levels.

This is written with such an eloquence of style, that it immediately grabs you, and then the story, it simply keeps you completely engaged.
This is an adventure, a life lesson, a story telling in the old truer sense of story telling.
You will Not be disappointed, and I hope we will hear more from this great writer!
