An excellent snapshot of the Yunnan province of China in the early 20th century. The descriptions of the locale and the people are accurate and the story engaging. This is possibly the most diverse and some would say interesting part of China, from the linguistic variations to the the unique geography that shaped them. Yunnan of today is a very different place, but the glimpses from the past that are so eloquently described in this book can be found just under the surface.The quality of the reproduction of this free ebook is excellent and the hyperlinking is working perfectly. This version must have been updated from the one reviewed by another reader.

RC Andrews and i grew up in the same small town in Wisconsin, although he was much earlier. This book might as well have been titled "How I Killed A Few Thousand Animals In China". Interesting, but gets a bit tiresome.
Very well written account by Mr. Roy Chapman Andrews. Exploring country previously unknown to Americans. Documenting the lifestyles, habits, and personalities of the Chinese people was extremely eye opening. What an exciting and long adventure this must have been. Also, a well accounted historical piece of what political turmoil was brewing in China and how the government treated it's people at the turn of the century.

I am reviewing the $9.99 edition of this book, which I got as a just-for-fun "stocking stuffer."
It is NOT the book that comes up when you poke the "look inside" icon. The book that you see then is the $40 edition. The book I received looks terrible, and is NOT something I would give as a present.
The $40 book has been typeset in something like Times New Roman, though, by my standards, the publisher didn't put all that much effort into it. This $10 thing looks like a memoir dictated to someone banging away on a typewriter. Why anyone living in the 21st century would release a book in REALLY UGLY typewritten form is somewhat beyond my comprehension.
Because I was shown one thing, and received another, I ACCUSE AMAZON.COM OF PERPETRATING A BAIT-AND-SWITCH SALE. This is a first for me. Needless to say, I'm returning this book. I'm also going to poke customer service pretty hard over this little adventure - they're going pay shipping costs, not me.
Roy Chapman Andrews was the real Indiana Jones. This is, as are all of his books, very informative and entertaining.
I found the 100 plus year old travel adventure in China interesting. A 100 year old map of the places visited would have tripled the value of the narrative. "The Ugly American" came to mind often. I did not find the emphasis on species collection of interest, but understand that was the theme of the book. This emphasis made the narrative repetitious, and toward the middle of the book I began quickly scanning those parts.
The author has a way of putting you at the scene in a way that makes you feel like you were traveling along with them. His attention to minor details is amazing. I loved the way he writes.
I think that I will have to see it to give a better rating. I am planning to visit. I due hope the information is reasonably current.
